Types of Application
Article 8 – Granting of Romanian Citizenship
Intended for foreign nationals who meet the legal requirements of residence, integration, and connection with Romania. This article regulates the granting of Romanian citizenship by naturalization, subject to documentary evidence, knowledge of the Romanian language, and compliance with Romanian law.
Article 8.1 – Supplementary Procedure
Applies to specific situations provided for by law, with additional documentation and proof requirements. It includes specific forms, legal declarations, and, when applicable, tests on the Romanian Constitution.
Article 8.2 – Granting for Exceptional Merit
Intended for stateless persons or foreign nationals who have contributed or may significantly contribute to Romania’s image through notable achievements in cultural, scientific, sporting, economic, or social fields.
Article 10 – Reacquisition of Romanian Citizenship
Intended for former Romanian citizens who lost their citizenship for legal reasons and wish to recover it. It requires specific documentation, proof of language proficiency, and compliance with the criteria established by current legislation.
Article 11 – Reacquisition by Descent
Applicable to descendants of Romanian citizens who lost their citizenship without their own will. This is one of the most common paths for those seeking to reconnect with their origins and obtain Romanian citizenship through family ties.
Article 27 – Renunciation of Romanian Citizenship
Regulates the legal procedure for voluntary renunciation of Romanian citizenship, including the submission of documents, payment of fees, and review by the competent authorities.
Romanian Citizenship for Minors
Covers applications for the granting or reacquisition (redobândirea) of Romanian citizenship for minors, linked to their parents’ applications under Articles 8, 10, or 11. The process follows specific rules and designated submission schedules.
Article 32 – Withdrawal of Romanian Citizenship
Defines the exceptional situations in which Romanian citizenship may be withdrawn, through a legal process, presentation of evidence, and a decision by the competent Commission, always respecting the right to defense.
